Jimmy Walker, Program Director

He currently is the Head Coach at Ventura College as well as the Associate Athletic Director of External Affairs.  From 2010-2016, Walker was also the Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director at Santa Clara High School in Oxnard.  He lead the team to a Frontier League championship in 2014 and 2 CIF playoff appearances in his 5 years.  The most playoff appearances by a Saints coach in 20 years. For his teams’ success, the coaches of the Frontier League voted Coach Walker, Coach of the Year in 2012.

 

Before teaming up with the Santa Barbara Grizzlies, Walker was part of the So Cal/Ventura Halos Organization.  He was the manager of the Ventura Halos in the California Collegiate League from 2012-2015 as well as the Head Coach for the 17U teams in the summer and the fall. During his time with the Halos, he helped over 100 players play college and professional baseball.

Coach Walker was the Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at Cal State Monterey Bay, a NCAA Division II baseball program. From 2005 to 2010, Coach Walker recruited 2 All-West Region players, 4 All-Conference players, helped sign 3 players to professional contracts, and coached 29 All-Conference All-Academic players. His on-field duties included coaching the pitchers and catchers, running the teams’ offense, and being Director of Camps and Clinics.

 

Preceding his tenure at CSUMB, Coach Walker was the pitching coach at Monterey High School helping them to a 3rd place section finish in 2004 and a section championship in 2005. 3 of his pitchers went on to play Division I college baseball at Texas, Cal and Long Beach State respectively.

Coach Walker began his coaching career in 2003 as the pitching coach at Monterey Peninsula College. He helped the team to a then school record with wins in a season at 29. One of his former pitchers, Daniel Barone, went on to pitch for the Florida Marlins in 2006.

Jimmy Walker’s baseball background includes being the Director of Player Development and Head Catching Instructor for the Aldrete Baseball Academy from 1998 to 2005. His duties included running the college-prep program for academy members, placing players onto college programs, individual lesson instruction, and coaching numerous travel teams.

 

Coach Walker played college baseball at Monterey Peninsula College (1998-1999) and the University of California-Santa Barbara (2000-2001). He also played professionally for the San Angelo Colts (Texas-Louisiana League, 2001), Duluth-Superior Dukes, and Kansas City T-Bones (Northern League, 2002-2003).

 

He graduated from CSUMB in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and has a Master’s of Education with an emphasis in Sports Management and Leadership from NorthCentral University (2010) as well as a Master's of Science in Exercise Science form California University, Pennsylvania (2016). He, his wife Karly and daughter Kaley reside in Ventura.

Charles Merricks, Pitching Coordinator

Charles grew up in Oxnard, Ca. Played Varsity four years at Channel Islands High School earning All County and All League honors. Played at UCLA for three years where he was named Bruins Defensive Player of the Year playing center field. Drafted in 2000 in the 17th round by the Colorado Rockies as a pitcher. The left hander played for 3 years for the Rockies, and 5 years of pro ball with a fastball reaching 97 MPH.
